Muay Thai & The Olympics
Muay Thai is a combat-style martial art that originated in Thailand and is closely related to kickboxing. The sport has been staged in international arenas numerous times, although it has never been recognized as an Olympic sport. It has recently been given the green light to become an Olympic sport. The International Federation of Muaythai Associations (IFMA) accepted the Kingdom's traditional martial art at the 138th IOC session in Tokyo. "This is the beginning of Muay Thai's potential as an Olympic sport," said Patama Leeswadtrakul, a member of the International Olympic Committee and the Culture and Olympic Heritage Commission, who was present at the conference. IFMA will receive the full support of the Thai government, according to Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon, who is also the president of the National Olympic Committee of Thailand.
